Very good at upscaling DVDs

The Toshiba XD-E500-K-TY provides excellent DVD upscaling for high-definition TVs. However, make sure you're certain that you don't want to fork out a bit more for a Blu-ray player instead.

Energy efficient. 1080p24 output.

Picture suffers a loss of detail with HDMI output. Default picture settings cause Sharpening artifacts. Overly softened image quality when displaying JPEG files. Low-resolution menus.

Conclusion At the $199 price point, the XD-E500 does a good job of regular DVD playback and upscaling as well. It's very much a garbage in, garbage out type of arrangement though, and it won't make DVDs the equivalent of Blu-Ray any time soon.
