Performance

The Sony STR-DE998 7.1-channel A/V receiver scored very well in performance thanks to its powerful home theater sound and detailed reproduction of SACD material, although it did tend to soften some details a bit.

7.1-channel A/V receiver; SACD/DVD-Audio inputs; upconverts composite and S-Video inputs to component video; A-B speaker switching.

Ho-hum styling; daunting setup routines; doesn't send stereo-mode bass to subwoofers; only two component inputs.

Sony's midprice receiver won't wow buyers with eye-popping styling or up-to-the-second features, but it sounds pretty sweet.
